This month, we focus on the shift from resistance to flow. Stay tuned for weekly practices and tools as we learn to work with our inner resistance to turn it into more clarity and flow in our lives. 

So often when something happens that we don’t like or that we didn’t expect, we can resist or brace ourselves. We can react, we can lash out. We can shut down or turn away. But what if this is an invitation? For learning, expansion, building resilience, and fostering new ways in these times when there is a lot to feel resistance to. 

When we hold the resistance in the body, we separate ourselves from our deeper truths and wisdom. We lose access to the very guidance that is trying to lead us forward.

In these moments, it can be challenging to find the path forward, and we may repeat old patterns, creating similar cycles in our lives. Holding this tension pattern in our bodies can also lead to chronic pain or disease, and chronic feelings of being dimmed or tired.

GET CURIOUS…

What if each moment of resistance is actually an invitation? A doorway into deeper awareness, an opportunity to know ourselves more deeply. We often operate so much of life on autopilot.

And we miss something in doing this: Opportunities for growth, or gems of deeper wisdom coming to the surface, or moments to become aware of the patterns we tend to default to. We miss the opportunity to understand ourselves (and each other) more deeply. 

When we feel resistance in a moment, can we let it open a possibility? A signal from the body saying: There is something here for you to learn.”

Instead of reacting or retreating, what if we practiced pausing and softening, letting the moment of presence create a new pathway?

When we practice tapping into the power we have to pause and be present with ourselves, we may be able to express ourselves in a way that feels more aligned with our deeper wisdom. We can see and feel solutions where we once felt stuck. As we practice this more and more in our lives, we build self-trust, and we give voice to our truth, which moves us more into alignment. We become more empowered in how we create our experience and our lives, and it is healing on so many levels.

OPEN FOCUS SOMATIC PRACTICE

(From Constriction → Expansion)

Open Focus is the practice of expanding your awareness beyond the point of tension and into the space around it. You can do this at any moment. Just by softening your gaze even, your whole body starts to shift. 

Open focus shifts the nervous system out of contraction and into regulation and flow.

Try this:

  1. Bring awareness to the area of tension in your body. This can be physical pain or a sensation from something happening that is causing constriction (both are usually related to some form of emotional resistance).

  2. Instead of focusing directly on it… begin to notice the space around it.

  3. Start to deepen your breath to and through the space of resistance/pain and around that area of the body. Invite the constricted space and the pain to spread and open.

  4. Notice if any shifts start to happen; let your awareness open as your body softens. Is the pain or constriction moving? Softening? 

  5. Listen deeply to your body, and if there is any wisdom arising from opening the space. Just notice.  

The more you practice getting curious and opening around resistance, the more you will start to do it naturally when something happens that strikes that resistance nerve. You will breathe, open and get curious, what is here for me? You will begin to feel more clarity and more flow.

It is simple yet so powerful. All it takes is presence and awareness. Practice makes progress. So let’s keep practicing.

I am a certified dance instructor, a certified Somatic Centered Transformation Life Mentor/Coach and a certified Breathwork instructor. I enjoy blending all of these together and through science and your own inner wisdom, invite people to get curious, move energy, to dissolve old patterns and beliefs and to live life in joy, presence, authenticity and as an empowered creator.
